How to Choose the Right Export Market (2026 Trade‑Data Checklist)

Most export teams choose markets based on size, reputation, or a tip from a trade show. A working checklist built on customs and shipment records replaces that guesswork with evidence — and it takes a fraction of the time a full research project would.

Why reputation is a weak reason to enter a market

A large GDP or fast‑growing economy tells you a country is important in the abstract. It does not tell you whether buyers there actually purchase your product, from whom, at what price, or through which channels.

A country can look attractive on paper and yet import almost none of what you sell — because domestic production covers demand, tariffs keep foreign supply out, or buyers are locked into long‑term contracts.

Customs and shipment records change the question. Instead of asking “Which market looks big?”, you ask: “Which market shows real, recurring import activity for my product?” That is a question the data can answer with transactions rather than projections.

Start with the product, not the country

Before comparing any markets, fix the product definition. Products are classified by HS codes, and the code structure differs by country — the U.S. uses 10 digits, China uses 8.

Start from the 6‑digit heading that matches your product, then narrow to the specific subheading. A market for one sub‑category can grow while the broader category shrinks, so a clean definition keeps the comparison honest.

Read demand before you read reports

Pull import records for your HS code and destination country over the last two to three years, then look at three things:

  • Is the product actively imported? Consistent volumes signal an established supply chain. Near‑zero volumes may mean domestic production, prohibitive tariffs, or simply unproven demand — any of which must be explained before proceeding.

  • Which way is the trend moving? Accelerating imports over the last 12 months suggest a market growing alongside existing demand. Flat or falling volumes indicate a mature or contracting market where you would be fighting for share.

  • Is there a seasonal pattern? Monthly breakdowns reveal ordering cycles, helping you time entry, staffing, and inventory.

Size the opportunity and check the price gap

Summing the import value for your HS code and country gives a conservative floor for the opportunity — the spend currently going to foreign suppliers.

From the same records, derive the average import unit price (total value/units). Compare this against your own landed cost:

  • If your landed cost sits comfortably below the observed price band, the market is worth a closer look.

  • If not, the math rarely improves with time.

Check who already supplies the market

Look at where the imports come from. If a single origin or a handful of suppliers dominate the value, you are entering against a strong incumbent cost structure. If supply is fragmented across many small suppliers, the market is more contestable and a new entrant has more room.

This single check tells you a great deal about how hard entry will be — the supply landscape article goes deeper into reading concentration.

The screening checklist

· Product defined to a specific HS subheading

· Two to three years of import records reviewed

· Demand confirmed and trend direction noted

· Top origins identified

· Average import unit price compared with landed cost

· Three to five candidates shortlisted — no more

Running the checklist in practice

If you are screening several countries at once, collecting and comparing trade records country by country can become the slowest part of the workflow.

Topease E-Platform’s Market Analysis solution brings customs and trade data into a single workflow, making it easier to compare market demand, trends, supplier origins, and trade values across potential export destinations.

The objective is not to automate the entire market-entry decision. It is to reduce the time spent identifying which markets deserve deeper research.

One thing to keep in mind

Screening narrows the field; it does not prove that a market will work.

Import activity shows what is being purchased and where it comes from. It does not tell you whether buyers will choose your brand, accept your positioning, meet your payment terms, or support your target margin.

Treat the shortlist as the starting point for the next stage of analysis: validating buyers, competitors, pricing, regulations, channels, and commercial fit.

Frequently asked questions

How many markets should I screen at once?

Three to five is a practical first pass. More than that dilutes the quality of each check and slows the decision. Expand the list only after the first round has filtered clearly.

What if my product is new and has almost no import history?

Records will be thin. Use adjacent or substitute HS codes, look at where similar products are imported, and treat any demand finding as a hypothesis to validate with channel conversations or sample orders.

Do I need paid data to do this?

Not necessarily. Free sources such as UN Comtrade and ITC Trade Map can provide useful country-level trade figures and are a good starting point for market screening.

Their coverage generally focuses on country-level trade statistics rather than detailed company-level activity. If you need shipment-level information, buyer and supplier names, transaction histories, or supplier relationships, richer trade intelligence datasets may provide additional detail.
